This Magic Season
Patience is a virtue that doesn’t come easy to Frank (left) and Joe (right), but it is a lesson that anyone who wants to be a farmer has to learn. Case in point has been the 2019 growing season.
After a decade of of farming, we didn’t see it coming. April, May and much of June were cold, wet, depressing. Then in late June it started getting really warm, actually hot.
Sure, farmers didn’t like it. Corn and bean growers had a terrible year But crops like strawberries and blueberries thrived in those rainy weeks and when the heat came they began to bulk up.
And so, in the first week of July, a blue riot broke out that lasted late into August. We had our best crop and year since we started riding Mother Nature’s roller coaster. And a big spread in the travel pages of the Chicago Tribune, picked up in the Detroit Free Press, brought a record number of visitors lured by our promise of blueberries grown without pesticides.
The important thing to u-pickers and farm market regulars was that the berries this year were especially tasty. And they seemed especially sweet. And berry lovers grabbed them up with gusto.
Will we see this again next year?
Who knows? One thing’s for sure. We grateful for this magic season. And we’ve frozen up many berries to keep the memory alive for the next 10 months.
And we are so grateful to you for continued support of naturally grown, tasty Michigan blueberries!
